Leadership Program Alum Coordinates First AfroColombian Day

On July 15th 2009 the Queens Museum of Art hosted the first ever celebration of AfroColombian heritage outside of Colombia. Guesnerth Josue Perea, alum of the CUNY/IVE Leadership program coordinated and organized the event. The event was supported by various organizations both in the Unites States and in Colombia and was purposed with informing attendees of the cultural contributions AfroColombians make to the Colombian national identity. Event organizers used various forms of media and entertainment to educate the public about AfroColombian culture. The event featured documentaries, videos, music, poetry readings and dancing and discussion forums. With an attendance of 93 people, the event was well attended for an event held on a Wednesday afternoon.

It is estimated that approximately 2/3 of the people, 62, were Colombian and about 20 of those individuals were AfroColombians. The other 31 people came from various countries such as Panama, Puerto Rico, Peru,

The coverage of the event by NY1, articles about the event that will come out in three local papers, the mention of the event in one of El Tiempo's Blogs (El Tiempo is Colombia's largest newspaper) and the number of people that attended the event gives organizers hope that next year's event will be better. Organizers were able to do this with an extremely small budget and only a month and a half of planning, they are confident that with more time and more financial support, they will be able to organize a really wonderful and educational event next year.
